Zambian President Announces Quest To Abolish Death Penalty Row.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

After several years of staying behind the social trend, Zambia has finally woken up to the global awareness. President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, announced that his government plans to abolish the death penalty row from the nation completely. Since this announcement, the President’s statement has received significant support from across Zambia. Among his supporters is Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman and philanthropist from Zambia and Africa. Dr. Rajan Mahtani highlighted that death penalty is an archaic and barbaric law. It is cruel, inhumane and degrading and does not provide any solution for the Zambian government. While praising the decision from the Zambian President, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that only an individual who is compassionate, respects ‘rule of law’ respects fundamental human rights as well as basic human dignity will find the need towards ending this barbaric punishment, even for the prisoners.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani in a recent interview stated that while working with Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ) he had the opportunity of meeting with several inmates who have transformed themselves and found comfort in the dedication of Almighty God. Further, Dr. Mahtani also said that there is a growing consensus towards abolishing death penalty across the globe and this consensus can be observed across Zambia too. As a result, majority of the past Presidents refused to sign death warrant. The last death execution was made in the year 1997 by late President Chiluba and since then, Presidents have been strategically avoiding death penalty by giving mercy pleas. At the same time, there have been reports that the condition of the Zambian prisons is extremely pathetic with many prisoners devoid of even fundamental human rights and basic human dignity across some of the maximum prisons. As such, the Zambian government has started strategic decongestion of prisons by releasing prisoners.

In such a scenario, giving death penalty is no longer viable and is against the nation’s social and legal representation. As such, the decision made by the Zambian President is a step in the right direction.

Capital punishment will be abolished by the current Zambian President

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

Since the announcement made by the Zambian President, the legal and regulatory scenario within the Zambian nation is in a whirlwind. On the special occasion of Africa Day, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema made a stunning announcement, sharing his quest to abolish the death penalty row. This announcement received both positive and negative responses, more positive than negative. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani noted businessman, charity worker, and philanthropist from Zambia, also supported this announcement by stating that the death penalty is a cruel, inhumane, and degrading law, archaic and does not provide any solution for the Zambian government. Dr. Mahtani further iterated that the awareness towards abolishing the death penalty has grown significantly across the globe and Africa and this trend can be seen across Zambia too. As a result, the last capital execution was carried out in the year 1997 and since then, Presidents have been exercising strategies like mercy prerogatives to avoid the death penalty. Furthermore, the present condition of a majority of the prisons across Zambia is below standards with some of the maximum prisons having dangerously ill conditions. It has been observed that these prisons do not even provide basic human dignity for the prisoners. This has forced the Zambian government to look for strategic alternatives such as strategic decongestion of prisons.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani further stated from a religious point of view that capital punishment or the death penalty is not appropriate in the eyes of god. According to the teachings of Jesus Christ, his sacrifice on the cross was for all human beings who believed in him and his values. The teachings of Jesus Christ are against killing other human beings as he atoned for them. Furthermore, the teachings also suggested that taking the life of another human being should only be allowed for those without sins, which is a rare case on this planet. As such, Dr. Rajan Mahtani indicated that even from a religious point of view, capital punishment is not acceptable.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani Supports Zambian President’s Decision

Current Zambian President, Hakainde Hichilema, recently made an announcement. On the occasion of Africa Day, President Hichilema announced that he plans to abolish the death penalty. This announcement has received widespread support across Zambia. One of the supporters has been Dr.Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman, philanthropist, and charity worker from Zambia. Dr.Rajan Mahtani is the owner of Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ), a noted Christian Outreach Program focussing on bringing the teachings of Jesus Christ to the prisoners, ex-prisoners as well as their families in Zambia. Also, the institute works to ensure that the prisoners are allowed transparent criminal justice and are not devoid of fundamental human rights & basic human dignity. As such, Dr. Mahtani founded Prison Fellowship and has extended its full support towards the decision made by the Zambian President. Dr. Rajan Mahtani, while adding his voice to this announcement, stated that there is a significant difference between making such a bold announcement and making it a reality. This is due to the significant bureaucracy, corruption and long processes within the government to change an archaic yet old and established law. As such, Prison Fellowship will provide legal and regulatory support to ensure that the announcement sees the light of the day.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani further stated that the punishment of the death penalty is cruel, inhumane, and degrading. Supporting this statement, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that the death penalty is not the solution for the increasing crimes, criminal activities, and unethical practices across the nation. Across Zambia, there are more than 380 prisoners awaiting death penalty and among them, around 25-30 are women. These people get up every day with the fear that it might be their last day on this planet. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has also stated that he received the privilege of meeting several inmates who have completely devoted themselves to the services of the almighty God.

Prison Fellowship will provide support for the President’s decision in all manner possible.

Finance Bank Zambia Owner Dr. Mahtani Sues Bob Diamond

Atlas Mara is a controversial banking & finance group which was established in the year 2013 by Bob Diamond. This banking group came into news when noted businessman and philanthropist Dr. Rajan Mahtani registered a case against the bank and its founder Bob Diamond. The banking group is listed at LSE (London Stock Exchange) and the objective behind floating this company was to transform it into a banking giant across Africa. With this objective, Bob Diamond furthered his plan of entering the Zambian state as well as achieving his business here.

According to the claim established by Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, Bob Diamond owned Atlas Mara entered into an agreement with Dr. Rajan Mahtani owned Finance Bank Zambia in the year 2015. It was a share sales & purchase agreement under which Atlas Mara took over majority shares of the Finance Bank Zambia for a specific sum. However, as per the claims established by Dr. Rajan Mahtani, Bob Diamond’s company has failed to make the required payment despite passing the due date. As such, Atlas Mara has been accused of breaching the terms of contract established with Finance Bank Zambia and is therefore liable for multi-million pound damage claim.

To further pursue his claim, Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has hired noted international law firm Omnia Strategy which is known for its owner Cherie Blair. Dr. Rajan Mahtani aims to present his case at the London High Court via Omnia Strategy soon. According to the representatives from Atlas Mara, the claims established by Dr. Rajan Mahtani are without merit and fundamentally weak. However, latest reports have indicated that along with Dr. Rajan Mahtani, there are several other investors who are pursing similar damage claims against Bob Diamond’s Atlas Mara and these claims have reached to the tune of 100 million pounds.

Despite the bold plan by Bob Diamond, the Atlas Mara shares collapsed since the banking group’s launch and have continued in the downward trend. On the other hand, Bob Diamond is planning yet another venture across the African Subcontinent.

Disturbances Created Despite Supreme Court Decision

Dr. Rajan Mahtani is a prominent businessman in Zambia who has always remained at the legal side of the business. He is considered as among those few businessmen in Zambia who have achieved success in spite of the rampant corruption, bureaucracy and unethical practices across the nation, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has been able to maintain a healthy business portfolio of transparent businesses such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investments and Finance Bank Zambia. At the same time, Dr. Mahtani continues to face challenges in his daily business operations. The prime example is the case of Portland Cement Zambia factory which dragged for more than 12 years before finally settling at the Supreme Court Zambia.

The first court to take the case was Lusaka High Court which announced its decision during May, 2018. However, this decision was controversial as the Ventriglias were announced as only majority shareholders and owners of the factory without any relevant evidence or testimonials. Then came the higher Court of Appeal which announced its verdict on 31st January 2019 in which the previous decision from the Lusaka High Court was rejected and Dr. Mahtani was announced as majority shareholder as well as legal owner of the factory. The third court was Supreme Court Zambia where a case was taken by the Ventriglia family claiming the decision from the higher Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court Zambia evaluated this claim and rejected it effectively due to lack of evidences, questioning circumstances as well as non-compliance of critical legislations.
However, it seems like the Ventriglia family have a blatant disregard for the highest-level court of the nation as they have continuous to mount their illegal status within the cement-manufacturing factory. Reports have indicated that hired thugs placed at the factory continuously prevented appointment of interim CEO so that no one takes charge of the factory. This attempt is a clear disregard of the judgement from the nations’ highest legal court. It seems like the Ventriglia family think themselves as above low. As of now, Dr. Mahtani has been given the official shareholding and legal ownership of the Portland Cement Zambia factory.
